In 1937, as bombs fell on the Basque region of Spain during the Spanish Civil War, three young sisters were evacuated for safety. Ten-year-old Aurora was sent to the Soviet Union, while seven-year-old twins Alicia and Araceli sailed to England on the SS Habana with thousands of other Basque children. Their parents, Santos and Carmen Morales, stayed behind and were later arrested.
What followed was years of heartbreaking separation:
The sisters grew up in different countries, facing cold winters in Leningrad, refugee camps in England, and the challenges of adapting to new cultures.
Their parents endured forced labor camps in North Africa and one of the Nazi concentration camps (Mauthausen), surviving unimaginable hardship.
After the war, through Red Cross efforts, the family was miraculously reunited in Mexico. From there, the story continues with migration to the United States, building a new life against all odds and the discovery of “displacement relatives” in the courts of the Queen of England.
