National Physical Activity & Sports Month

May 2025

This month is highlighting the importance of staying active through sports and other fitness activities.

It is so important for older adults to fit physical activity into their schedules! As we age, physical activity is vital to maintaining our health and independence. Not only does it improve our brain health, assist in weight management, and lower our risk for cardiovascular disease and some cancers, but it also works to strengthen our muscles and bones.

Adults should be moving more and sitting less throughout the day, making sure to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day.

Are you just getting started to being physically active?

Start slow and do what you can, even a 5-minute walk has real health benefits. Build up to more activity over time.

Remember, some physical activity is better than none!

Ways to Increase Physical Activity

  • Walk whenever possible

    • Take a short walk after dinner

    • Go for a half-hour walk instead of watching TV

  • Move more in your home

    • Do small work around the house, to the best of your ability

    • Stand up and stretch if you notice you have been sitting too long

  • Live actively

    • Join an exercise or yoga group/class

    • Dance to music

Exercise Provides:

  • Improved stamina and energy as well as toned muscles and bone strength and density

  • Improved circulation and breathing for healthier heart and lungs

  • Improve balance and reduce the risk of falls, as well as improved cognitive abilities

  • Greater opportunity to socialize and build a supportive community by participating in classes or groups, or even bringing a friend along for a brisk walk around campus
